Kyiv, June 30, 2023 – President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation today, highlighting the progress made during a busy day at the Verkhovna Rada. In a series of meetings and discussions, Ukraine solidified its commitment to the European Union, received crucial support from the United States, focused on environmental consequences of war, enhanced cooperation with Latin America, and emphasized the importance of the economy alongside defense efforts.
President Zelensky began his speech by acknowledging the historical significance of Ukraine’s involvement in the European Council meeting, affirming that it has become a tradition for Ukraine to be among the members of the European Union. He stressed the importance of Ukraine’s defense in the ongoing war and the path to victory, while emphasizing the need for support from partners and ensuring security for both Ukraine and the entire European region. Zelensky expressed Ukraine’s desire to strengthen unity within Europe and called for negotiations to begin on Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.
Another significant event of the day was President Zelensky’s meeting with Mike Pence, the 48th Vice President of the United States. Zelensky expressed his gratitude for the vital American support Ukraine has received from all segments of society, including families, civil society, political leaders, and both parties in Congress. He discussed various aspects of defense and cooperation between Ukraine and the United States, touching upon topics such as weapons, the capabilities of Ukrainian soldiers, and shared values.
Addressing the environmental consequences of the war, President Zelensky held a meeting with members of the International Working Group, including prominent figures such as Greta Thunberg and Margot Wallström. The focus of the discussion was on the Russian terrorist attack and ecocide at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant, as well as the establishment of a group dedicated to addressing the destructive impact of Russian aggression on the environment. President Zelensky emphasized that combating ecocide is an integral part of Ukraine’s Peace Formula and stressed the need for its full implementation.
President Zelensky also highlighted his conversation with the President of Guatemala, during which they discussed the Peace Formula, cooperation with Latin America, and support in demining efforts. Most notably, they discussed the establishment of a Tribunal for Russian aggression, which would play a crucial role in ensuring accountability for the ongoing conflict.
Economic stimulation and business protection were key points of discussion during President Zelensky’s meeting with Ukrainian business representatives.
